If you are planning a diving trip to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, you will inevitably have to choose between two very different worlds: Sharm El-Sheikh and Dahab.
Separated by just an hour's drive, these two towns offer fundamentally different experiences both above and below the water. Whether you are a hardcore wreck diver or a beginner looking for a relaxed certification, this comparison will help you decide which base is right for you.
1. Diving Style: Boats vs. Jeeps
This is the biggest practical difference between the two destinations.
- Sharm El-Sheikh is Boat-Based: Nearly all the world-famous sites (Ras Mohammed and the Straits of Tiran) are reached via large, comfortable day boats. You spend the whole day at sea, enjoy a buffet lunch, and return in the late afternoon. It is the height of convenience but requires boat-legs!
- Dahab is Shore-Based: In Dahab, you gear up at your dive center and then throw your tanks into the back of a 4x4 Jeep. You drive along the coastline to the site, gear up on the beach, and walk into the water. It is flexible, rugged, and you can be back in a seaside cafe 15 minutes after your dive.

- Sharm El-Sheikh: Vertical Drama: Sharm is the place for massive vertical walls, strong currents, and big schools of fish. Because the sites are further offshore, you have a much higher chance of seeing large pelagics like hammerheads, reef sharks, and dolphins.
- Dahab: Geological Wonders: Dahab is famous for its unique geological formations like the Blue Hole and The Canyon. While it has beautiful reefs, the focus is often on these dramatic underwater structures. The marine life is excellent but generally on a smaller, more intimate scale than the schooling action in Sharm.
3. Topside Atmosphere: Luxury vs. Chilled
- Sharm El-Sheikh: 5-Star Resort Life: Sharm is a major international tourist destination. Think gated resorts, luxury spas, high-end shopping, and vibrant nightlife in Soho Square or Naama Bay. It is polished, professional, and built for high-volume tourism.
- Dahab: Bedouin Chilled: Dahab has a legendary 'hippie' vibe. The town center is a collection of bohemian seaside cafes, small independent bookstores, and local Bedouin markets. There are no massive hotel blocks in the center; instead, you find cozy guesthouses and specialty dive-camps. It is slow-paced and culturally immersive.
